Foul vs. Fair

In Macbeth, we see a reoccurring theme of fair vs foul. It's a motif in the book that we see in the beginning line from the main character Macbeth, "So foul and fair a day I have not seen." Then, from the point where Macbeth meets the three witches on, Macbeth deals with the consequences of being either a fair, or a foul person.
It's important to concentrate on this particular theme because it's an idea having everything to do with the plot of the story, particularly in relation to Macbeth. In order for Macbeth to achieve his destiny, he does foul deeds like murdering Duncan. In other cases, he avoids his destiny by doing foul things like trying to kill Fleance. But because he chose the foul approach instead of the fair, the fairness came back to bite him in the butt. For example, when Macbeth killed Duncan, he became an unhappy king, and he eventually died because he killed Duncan. I suppose the main point in the story was that foulness only leads to a person's demise, and one should always choose fair.

Macbeth quote

"They hailed him father to a line of kings. Upon my yea they placed a fruitless crown and put a barren scepter in my grip, thence to be wrenched with an unlineal hand, no son of mine succeeding." (pg. 85)

This quote is relevant to the plot of Macbeth and also the whole motif of destiny, and how you achieve destiny. Basically, Macbeth is ranting about the fact that Banquo's children will be kings and queens however, Macbeth's children will not. And so he's saying that how can he really be THE king if his children won't be kings. And also that all of his hard work will be given to somebody else, when he intended it for his kids.
The way that this quote fits into the plot is through the killing of Banquo and the attempted killing of Banquo's son. This jealousy over Banquo led to the killing, and the proclamation for revenge by Banquo. If Macbeth hadn't killed Banquo, there wouldn't have been a need to seek revenge on Macbeth. So, Macbeth is trying to run from his destiny, but may end up fueling it by the final scene.

Free Post: My Spring Break

Overall, my spring break was pretty good. I got out of school on Thursday and rode a bus to Orlando. The band was going to Disney World and the Universal Studios theme park. I wasn't too excited for this trip because I'm deathly afraid of drops in roller coasters. Disney World has a lot of roller coasters, and Universal especially has a lot of big roller coasters, so there were quite a couple I didn't ride. But, there was a lot of stuff that I could ride and it made things a lot more fun.
When I came home from Orlando, I was pretty relieved. I mean four days in theme parks can just get kind of exhausting. I was already making plans and such, then I woke up the next day with a sore throat and a tremendous amount of pressure in my ears. I made the best of my situation and watched a bunch of House episodes, which are always entertaining. When I finally felt better on Sunday, going bike riding on the Mississippi River levee was a good choice. The beginning of spring was taking effect on the trees and grass, and so wildflowers were blooming and it was just a pretty day overall.

P.S. The worst thing about roller coasters with drops are the pictures afterwards where they took a picture of your terrified, but hilarious face and then make it possible for your siblings to see it.

Two Statements, 4 and 8

4. Who we are--our essential character and temperament--is fixed and unchangeable.
I strongly disagree with this, humans change all the time based on their past conditions. I've changed as I've grown up to become more and more hardworking as my parents have raised me to be like. I think in Macbeth, he changes from a honest gentlemen into a backstabbing subordinate, because he had an experience with the three witches.

8. If something is destined to happen, it will happen without your interference. I agree, sometimes we think we need to interfere and it happens because we interfere, but when it was told to happen, whoever said it would happen knew that the person would interfere to make it come true, so in a way, we do let it happen. In Macbeth, I think that the fact that he's interfering is him letting it happen to him. I let things happen very often, when Christmas comes around, I know I'm going to get morning presents, but I don't exactly strongly hint to my parents that we need to have presents on Christmas day or anything.

Moving

The snapping of lowly tree branches as you swiftly move through them,
their texture allowing you to gain footing as you meander along your way.
Walking, and only if you could, look up the mountain
you could see the sun shining with it's infinite rays.
Then, climbing can you see the land underneath your feet,
where auburn, amber, and crimson colors spread with variety among the heat.

"I'll Be" Edwin McCain

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/edwinmccain/illbe.html

This song is very euphonic when read like a usual love song, this creates an atmosphere of comfort. Also, the phrase "I'll be" is pronounced multiple times representing an anaphora. There's also a part, where theres more cacophony in order to show the more aggressive and mean things he's been feeling. Whenever he says, "And rain falls angry on the tin roof," he uses personification with the rain.
Again with the euphony, it gives the audience a feeling of comfort. Especially in, "And emeralds from mountains thrust towards the sky
Never revealing their depth.
Tell me that we belong together,

Dress it up with the trappings of love." The speaker is a man in love that hasn't quite been officially in a relationship with the girl he's talking to. The occasion is the speaker confessing his love for the girl and telling her how great of a boyfriend he could be. The audience intended by the speaker must have been the girl he's in love with, and to tell her he's in love with her. Overall, this song is just a love son with a euphonic tone bringing comfort.

Free Post: My future weekends

A couple weeks ago I went to see the Movie, "The Life of Walter Mitty," and it was really cool. The main character had been day dreaming his whole life about going places and taking risks, but since his dad died, he's been to shy to try something like that. Then the conflict comes in and he's obligated to go out and take risks, and once he does, he starts to feel better about himself and things start to get better for him. Not to mention he lives through some amazing adventures.
Of course after the movie I was thinking, "I want to do that." I've always wanted to go out to the Himalayas or to the Grand Canyon, and who doesn't, but that movie was just like a reminder for me that past school, there's always going to be cool things you can go see and do. I guess that I was just thinking about things I could do during my upcoming weekends. Basketball is getting more crazy and we'll see how it goes, but I'm really excited to be coming into spring and getting a bunch of opportunities to rock climb or something else new.

Research Paper Draft

I'd say that I feel pretty confident in my research paper, I feel most confident about the research in my paper. I focused most on that part because in the end it is a research paper, so it would make sense to focus on that part. But I'm not completely in love with my citations within the paper, or my conclusion.
The hardest part for me was trying to bring together the information to tell the audience my overall idea. Then some less hard things were keeping up with all the citation information, and also transitioning from stories to connecting things with the thesis. I suppose the easiest part was preparing and analyzing my information because I had done that before with the Literary Analysis so it wasn't a foreign object for me. The best feedback I could get would be based on my transitions, and my introduction and conclusion.

Draft
1/30- 2 hours- I watched the two videos and then worked for an hour on the body of my research paper. Then I read in the Norton and worked on the draft for the next 30 minutes until I had been working for two hours total.
2/1- 1 hour- Just worked on the body of my paragraph, trying to focus on the information instead of floating quotations or citations or the connection of the information back to the thesis.
2/2- 1 hour, 55 minutes- I finished just preparing, quote/paraphrasing, and analyzing and I started citing, editing, and connecting back to the thesis. Then I did my intro and conclusion, and put in the works cited.

Research

My research project is basically how women in the classical world were able to overcome male dominance and be successful. Kind of like how maybe Albert Einstein was able to become one of the most successful scientists in history, but he never got good grades in school. He overcame all the expectations he had been given and filled in half of a textbook. So this thought combined with rights and responsibilities led my to thinking of classical period women. During that period of time, women were associated a lot with their rights in comparison to men. So, I connected their rights with overcoming the rights and their given responsibilities and becoming successful women who were successful.
Thesis: Many classical period civilizations were male dominated, of these male-dominated civilizations, subordinate women tried to increase their quantity of rights by extending the boundaries of the women’s original rights. Some other civilizations were very close to having gender equality and among these civilizations women were more distinct in successes of their civilization by achieving new and more significant responsibilities with the coming of rights.

Madison's Prompt

Divergent: The choosing ceremony

They called my name, my mind still swirling from Abnegation to Dauntless, and even more Amity, I had absolutely no idea. Abnegation was the selfless and kind factor, but I wanted to have fun and I also wanted to do things I could never do in Abnegation. Dauntless was fun, and exciting, and I am brave, but I would never fit into their brutal lifestyle. Amity is peaceful and kind, they only love and never hate, but I also want to be brave and selfless sometimes.
There I was, the knife was inches away, and my blood belonged somewhere, whether I knew where it belonged to or not. I looked to my right and left, then to my parents off in the distance, how I would love to talk to them for a fraction of a second. I also recognized how everybody was here for my life decision, for whatever factor I would be stuck in for the rest of my life, and my life depended on this moment.
I picked up the knife, and looked at the blade that got sharper every second. I only felt a little bit of pain as I became closer to my life sentence. You may not believe this, but I stood there in front of everybody and did eenie-minie-moe between the three bowls and just like that, I was going to the factor Amity. Everybody was shocked and so was I, but sometimes you just have to let fate fall in the hands of chance.

My Research Project

My research project is on successful women of classical times and how the women affect their particular civilization. In the classical period of ancient history, most civilizations were male dominated. These patriarchal societies left little room for achievements of ancient women. I'm researching mainly the women that were able to fill these little spaces of room and what the women had to do to become successful which, for me, is very inspiring and interesting.
My topic is important because since the classical period civilizations were male-dominated, it's hard to recognize female efforts focussed on being successful and significant. Not only that, but to see how their successes have impacted modern lives is also important.
This week I'm going to focus on my annotated bibliographies and try to revise them into complete, formal, and informative bibliographies. If I can do this then hopefully it'll help me to form my rough draft and later on, I'll have an even better final draft. When I first did my bibliographies, I had trouble on filling out all of the requirements of the annotated bibliographies and later I used some about.com articles because they were fast, easy, and informative, but now I know they were not reliable sources so I need to go back and find more reliable sources. Now that I've seen Dr. D's presentation I also need to go back and do more research on my sources. And then, the very last thing I have to do is find a primary source or two and do my annotated bibliography right this time.
